This is for all the people who are at a place in life where they don't quite fit in to any specific category or are trying to find their place. It's somewhere between college and settled down. People in this group are constantly finding fresh starts and, as the title says, new beginnings. You do not have to be an official member to join the group, though I hope you will join us as often as you can.

LIFE groups are gatherings of people who meet regularly to encourage and support one another in their spiritual journey. Life groups for sharing and learning are a place to do life together: living, learning, eating and playing together. We consider LIFE groups to be one of the most important ways to experience connection and community at Central. Through a LIFE group, you are able to learn the names behind the friendly faces you meet on Sunday and share in your spiritual journey with others – encouraging one another as you live, learn and grow together and with God. A LIFE group is made up of people from all backgrounds and upbringings - members, visitors and community friends are invited to come share and walk together in this wonderful journey.

Stephen Ministers are lay persons who listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support to people who are facing a crisis or going through tough times. They are God’s love in action and are available to “walk along side” someone who is hurting.

Held at 9:45am every Sunday

It is our belief that the Sunday School teaching program provides the glue that bonds our church family together. Spiritual enrichment and lasting friendships are benefits of the Sunday School program.

Adults have the opportunity to study and discuss the Old and New Testament as it applies to our daily lives. Dedicated teachers enlighten class members with their knowledge and abilities while encouraging growth through discussion and practice. We believe these classes strengthen our relationship with God, our marriages, our families, our friends and our community.

There is a place for you in Sunday School! You would be welcomed in any of these classes!

There are several classes to choose from, each with a different focus:
  • Cornerstone: young adults, single or married or college age students. The class deals with contemporary topics in a Biblical context as it relates to their lives.
  • Transitions: young adults, single or married or college age students. Members rotate teaching topics which are relevant to their lives. The leaders encourage active discussion. It is flexible for those adults who may not be in attendance each week. Participants meet uptown bi-monthly for supper and fellowship.
  • Growing Christians: mostly young adults and married couples who are striving to grow in their Christian faith and service to the church. Teachers rotate, leading the class in discussion topics of interest to the class. This class sponsors frequent socials and Sunday fellowship dinners.
  • Living Word: any adult, male and female. Two teachers bring the lesson each week strictly from God’s word and do not use any standard curriculum.
  • Lost and Found: young and middle age singles and couples. The class offers warm fellowship and lively discussions using several outstanding teachers. Regular social events and service projects are sponsored.
  • Saints and Sinners: singles and couples of all ages. Several teachers lead discussions centering around a variety of topics. Activities and projects include offering assistance to foster children at Christmas and occasional socials.
  • Hoey Bible class: any adult, male or female. The oldest Sunday School class at Central is steeped in local and church history due to the influence of two former governors. Several teachers offer weekly lessons with music and singing as an integral part.
  • Living Free: young, adult women. Study and discussion of contemporary topics is the focus.
  • Wesley: mostly retired women and couples. The International Lesson Series is used in this class and is taught by rotating teachers. Regular fellowship events emphasize service to others through mission projects. Music and singing is an important part of each class.
  • Golden Links: older ladies, married, single or widowed. The class uses the International Lesson Series with a different teacher each week. This active group holds two socials each year and is involved with many local church projects.

The United Methodist Men of Central is comprised of men of all ages. UMM meets monthly on Sunday at 7:30am for breakfast. All men of the church are welcome and are encouraged to bring their children and/or grandchildren. During breakfast, we have fellowship¸ devotions and conduct business regarding service projects and fundraising initiatives. We offer two BBQ fundraiser's each year to support missions and our CUMC youth. We also provide an annual scholarship to a CUMC college student.

The United Methodist Women is a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. UMW is open to any woman who is a member of Central.

Central’s UMW meets the second Monday of each month, September through May during the lunch hour. Meetings are held in the fellowship hall. The group achieves the UMW goals through pledges and fundraiser's.
CUMC has several active ladies' circles: Lydia, Joy and WINGS.

There are three active circles at Central United Methodist Church. Each one functions under the United Methodist Women auspices and supports the UMW with a yearly pledge to the conference.
  • Joy Circle meets at 11:00am on the 2nd Monday of each month. Their focus for the year is the study of faith based book which members share and discuss. Members offer active support for each other.

  • Lydia Circle meets at 1:15pm on the 2nd Monday of each month. The group supports the goals of the Methodist conference through World Bank offerings. Their meetings provide opportunities for fellowship and reviews of Christian books. Lydia Circle is the newest circle at Central consisting of members from the former Altar Guild.

  • WINGS meets 3rd Wednesdays at 10:00am in the church parlor. This circle recently published a cookbook “Holy Chow” proceeds from which were used to fund many church projects. These caring, generous women enjoy their service projects as well as many fellowship activities. Members offer care and support for each other.

The Older, Wiser, Livelier, Seniors is open to adults age 50 and over who enjoy having a nice lunch away from home. We meet the 3rd Monday of each month in the fellowship hall where we enjoy delightful conversations, personal stories, entertainment and informational programs. On occasion, we also take trips to museums and theaters.

The church staff and leaders are asking you to please visit the homepage of our website and view the list of volunteers needed for that month. Then all you need to do is get in touch with the contact person listed on that calendar and help with the project listed. What an easy way for us as members and friends of Central to fulfill the pledge we make to the church to "serve".

If you are a church leader, you need to get your volunteer needs, including dates and times, to Keely before the beginning of each month to be a part of that list of volunteers needed.

The “Walk to Emmaus”, a spiritual renewal program, is the Methodist adaptation of a movement started in Spain in 1949. The current program was developed by the Upper Room ministry of the UMC to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. Participants begin the program with a 72 hour pilgrimage weekend.

The program gets its name from the story in Luke 24: 13-35 where the risen Christ appears to two disciples walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus.

Many members of Central have participated in the Walk weekend and are active in the program. Central is a member of Grace Emmaus Community which also includes many churches of several denominations in Cleveland County and the surrounding area.
